Film Program for the FU Seminar:
What Does Music Do with Film?

Film still from INFLATION: A collage of several heads.

Wed 17.01.
17:00

Film has always been an audiovisual medium. During the silent film era, the sonic landscapes crafted to accompany the films showing were very diverse and by no means unified. The program brings together films from the early era of silent cinema (1903-1949) that we will watch and discuss: LE TONNERRE DE JUPITER (France 1903) stems from the animation studio of Georges Méliès and is a typical example of the cinema of attractions of this era. INFLATION(Hans Richter, Germany 1928) and PACIFIC 231(Jean Mitry, France 1949) give in to the rush of acceleration. RHYTHMUS 23 (Hans Richter, Germany 1923) is an example of absolute film, while LE RETOUR À LA RAISON (Man Ray, France 1923) and LA SOURIANTE MADAME BEUDET(Germaine Dulac, France 1923) belong to the French cinéma pur movement. IN DER NACHT (Walter Ruttmann, Germany 1931) develops images to a piece of music. (Eunice Martins)
